Annapurna South (7219m)
In Sanskrit, Annapurna means "Goddess of Abundant Harvest." Indeed, when one surveys the Annapurna range from the Pokhara region, the land at the base of the mountains does impart an impression of fertility.Annapurna South is the mountain farthest on the left when seen from Pokhara. Because it stands at the source of Modi Khola, it is also called Moditse. It is also referred to as Ganesh because the large summit is thought to resemble the elephant's head of the Hindu diety, Ganesh. To the east of the elephant's trunk lies a long ridge and Patal Hiunchuli. The mountain's summit is compreised of three peaks with the south peak being highest at 7219m. The central peak which connects to the east ridge stretching to Hiunchuli is estimated to be 7071m high, and the north peak which continues on to the ridge that contains the northern Fang is thought to be approximately 7010m high.
